A mão é grande e aperta a minha de forma confortável, sem por muita pressão, mas com firmeza. Em seu mundo, os debates são ferozes como os combates das grandes lendas do boxe que tanto admiramos, porém lá usa das palavras. Já sentenciou, tendo como réus diversos nomes importantes do Brasil, porém não se gaba disto diferentemente do que fariam muitos pugilistas.
 
O desembargador Antonio Carlos Debatin Cardoso é um homem da Justiça. Atuou no Tribunal de São Paulo por décadas. Seu caminhar é compassado e o olhar parece não vacilar, não é composto pelo ar autoritário raivoso que demanda ser respeitado, mas atrai tal sentimento de forma natural como um leão que já viveu muito.
 
Com seu filho, advogado, assistimos ao embate de Sergio "Maravilla? Martínez e Julio Cesar Chávez Jr. em 2012. Os três torcendo como crianças por um homem que só queria um trono que era seu por merecimento, mas fora usurpado por um alguém que não o merecia com jogos de bastidores e influencia familiar. Alguns aplicam justiça com os punhos cerrados, quebrando ossos, é como sabem fazer. Em nosso julgamento "pugilístico? dentro e fora do ringue Maravilla é o melhor em atividade independentemente de peso.

O boxe lhe é uma distração. Quando jovem treinou na academia Guarani, tendo como técnico os Srs. Benjamin Rutta e Lucas. Fã de Eder Jofre, Muhamad Ali, Marvin Hagler  e Joe Frazier, é chamado assim pelo filho que disputou a Forja no final dos anos 1980. Em cidades do interior de São Paulo iniciou sua carreira julgando casos. Isso lhe deu base para chegar à capital e também saber que assuntos duros devem ser tratados pelo bem do cidadão que em algum momento precisa abrir os olhos para verdades perturbadoras.
 
Está próximo de lançar um livro sobre a Santa Inquisição da Igreja Católica. "História da Inquisição 313-2013?, a obra que apontará as sequelas do movimento desde seu início até o século XIX e tempos atuais. A obra vem em momento oportuno dentro do contexto que vive a Igreja Católica tendo o Papa Bento XVI renunciado em meio a escândalos de corrupção financeira e pedofilia e a eleição do Papa Francisco.
 
A Santa Inquisição era o braço responsável por perseguir e repreender aqueles que eram contrários aos interesses da Igreja, que não necessariamente seguia a palavra de Jesus Cristo que sempre pregou a paz. A vida do Papa Alexandre VI (Rodrigo Borgia) é um reflexo deste viés da Igreja. O líder ocupou o posto entre 1492 até 1503 e viveu regado de orgias e disputas de poder tanto que é uma das influências do livro O Príncipe de Nicolau Maquiavel.
 
 "A mentalidade persistiu. Senti na própria pele nos anos 1950 quando estudei em colégio religioso?, afirma o aposentado desembargador no sofá de sua residência na região abastada do centro de São Paulo próximo à Avenida Paulista. Mesmo fora dos tribunais ainda mantém fluxo constante e contatos neste ambiente.
 
"A hipocrisia e a violência não resolvem os problemas, podem no máximo adiar soluções?, assim vê a violência imposta pela Santa Inquisição sendo reproduzida por outros órgãos de diversos setores sociais nos tempos atuais inclusive no jornalismo.
 
O Brasil é tido como o 4º país mais perigoso para o ofício de jornalista. Ameaças físicas, verbais ou até por e-mail chegam àqueles que expõem um ponto de vista que contrarie interesses ou verdades que ferem.
 
Desembargador Cardoso recorda de quando Millôr Fernandes perdeu o emprego após 25 anos no mesmo local por ter feito piadas sobre religião. Hoje crê que colunistas como José Simão possuem maior liberdade, entretanto ainda sente um controle velado em alguns veículos e meios.
 
Um desses controles crê estar relacionado no assunto Santa Inquisição, pois esta instituição perdurou oficialmente durante sete séculos e somente encontrou 4 filmes que a ela se referem (Fantasmas de Goya (2007),As Bruxas de Salem (1996) e O Processo de Joana D?Arc (1962) e Giordano Bruno). Por outro lado, a 2ª Guerra Mundial, que durou 6 anos, possui centenas de filmes a ela referentes, "sendo notória a participação do lobby religioso para impedir maiores informações sobre a longa noite que parou a humanidade, durante séculos?, acrescenta ele.
 
"Um jornalista calado é a mesma coisa que a queima de livros pelos governos ditatoriais e a Inquisição. Então se dá porque algumas forças não querem que saibam de algo que ele sabe e que pode comprometer pessoas e instituições?, traça um paralelo entre o que se passa com alguns jornalistas do Brasil e algo como ele vê sendo em parte herança da Inquisição.
 
"Muito da formação do homem, principalmente um intelectual, se dá pelas suas leituras?. Ao se incomodar com o sistema do colégio que cursava, procurou ensinamentos nos livros proibidos pelo Index da Igreja Católica daquele período, encontrando saberes naqueles que fugiram da ordem comum e hoje são referenciados: Eça de Queiroz, Jorge Amado, Alexandre Herculano, Nelson Rodrigues... Ou seja autores que lidavam com a complexidade humana.
 
O boxe também lida com essas nuances do ser humano e como levantou recentemente o cronista Wilson Baldini do Estadão com ajuda do jornalista Edmundo Leite há 50 anos, no dia 26 de março de 1963, o Papa João XXIII condenava a nobre arte e declarou então por considera-la um esporte bárbaro e "contrário aos princípios naturais?.
 
Enquanto Desembargador Cardoso escreve seu livro acompanha os feitos, no certame nacional, de Patrick Teixeira, Jackson Jr. e George Arias, conversa com Marcelo "Martelo? Nascimento e admira o ingresso de Santo Arias, Alex de Oliveira e Servílio de Oliveira na Faculdade de Direito. Lembra muito do embate parelho entre Lino Barros e Edson Foreman organizado pelo cubano Thomas Cabrera: "homens lutam com rivais de mesmo porte?. Internacionalmente respeita a luta de Hector Javier Velazco da Argentina que busca de uma forma quixotesca condições melhores aos colegas de luvas.
 
Se descontrai ao saber que Raphael Zumbano "Love? possui traços que lembram o carismático Tonico Bastos, personagem de Jorge Amado em Gabriela. Por alguns segundos o rosto se torna mais suave e risonho ao sair dos bastidores da censura, jornalismo e pugilismo, mas volta ao lembrar da situação empresarial de Marcus Vinícius de Oliveira, o "Ratinho? que esteve envolvido ao mesmo tempo com dois nomes dos negócios de luvas e crê "a corda sempre rompe do lado mais fraco?.
 
Figura muitas vezes presente nas rodadas de boxe do Baby Barioni ? agora inativo. Lá assistiu pessoalmente estes brasileiros que suam e se esforçam de verdade dentro do ringue em busca de condições melhores. Não chegou a ver ao vivo Ratinho que gostaria de assistir assim como Alexsandro "Pit? Cardoso, o qual é conhecido por defender seus parentes e amigos seja qual for a situação.
 
Para que estes meninos e também as meninas, como as da seleção nacional, pudessem alçar voos condizentes com seus corações e habilidades, o desembargador é enfático e até decreta "precisa de melhor propaganda, organização, empresário e livre jornalismo que é indispensável até mesmo para a propaganda?. O mesmo vê na internet um meio de divulgação deste esporte que está voltando timidamente  à televisão. Entretanto ressalta que é necessário que os envolvidos se tornem mais atuantes e não dependam somente de um veículo em específico.
 
Durante a conversa o informo do encerramento do blog Córner do Leão, esta entrevista é seu último post. "Lamentável porque gozava de plena credibilidade, as notícias eram lá vinculadas e tratadas de forma que eu gosto e hoje pouquíssimas publicações tem isto. Antigamente se tinha o boxe nos jornais...Conte comigo para retomar seu excelente e destemido trabalho em favor da "nobre arte?.
 
A conversa é encerrada e tomo o último gole de café. O dono da casa e sua esposa me lembram que sou bem vindo para assistir outros combates de boxe ou mesmo para conversar sobre Justiça e Política. O senhor me acompanha até a portaria de seu prédio e se despede com um aperto de mão coloca a mão esquerda sobre meu ombro.

The trio supporting as kid a man who only wanted a throne that was his by merit but was usurped by someone who didn?t deserve by backstage politics and family influence. Boxing is a hobby for him. When young he landed a few punches in the Guarani Boxing Gym trained by Mr. Benjamin Rutta and Lucas. Fan of Eder Jofre, Muhammad Ali, Marvin Hagler and Joe Frazier he is called this way as a nickname by his son who competed in the late 1980?s in the Forja dos Campeões (Champion?s Forge) a tournament for beginners which saw the upcoming of Eder Jofre and Miguel de Oliveira. In cities in the countryside of São Paulo he started to judge cases and this gave him the base to come to the capital city and also to understand that some subjects must be treated for the good of the citizen that in some moment need to open his eyes to tormented truths.
 
His next step will be publish a book about the Inquisition by the Catholic Church. "History of Inquisition 313-2013?, a book that will point the consequences of the group since it?s ending till the 21th century and it comes in a fortunate moment inside the context that the Catholic Church lives having in sight the departure of Pope Benedict XVI amongst the scandals of financial corruption and pedophilia and the election of Pope Francis.
 
The Inquisition was the responsible arm for pursue and reprimand those who were contrary to the interests of the Church which not necessarily followed the word of Jesus Christ who always preached peace. The life of Pope Alexander VI (Rodrigo Borgia) is a reflex of this period of the Church. The leader was in command from 1492 to 1503 and lived in orgies and power struggles in such a way that he is one of the influences of Machiavelli for the book The Prince.
 
"The mentality persisted. I felt in myself during the 50?s when I went to a religious school?, says the retired magistrate in the sofa of his residence in the wealthy part of the center of São Paulo close to the Paulista Avenue. Even outside the courts he still keeps a constant flux and contacts in this environment.
 
"The hypocrisy and violence don?t solve the problems. They only postpone the solutions?. This is how he sees the violence imposed by the Inquisition being reproduced by other organs of a lot of other sectors of society in current era and even in Journalism.
 
Brazil is pointed as the 4th most dangerous country to work as a journalist. Physical and verbal threats and even e-mails come to those who expose a point of view different or even truths itself.
 
The Magistrate Cardoso remembers when the journalist Millôr Fernandes lost his 25 years job because of religious jokes. Today he beliefs that columnists like José Simão have more liberty but he still feels a veil of control in some vehicles.
 
One of those curtains he believes is related to the Inquisition matter. Because this inquisition lasted officialy 7 centuries and he found only four movies about it: Goya?s Ghosts (2006), The Crucible (1996) and Procès de Jeanne d?Arc (1962) and Giordano Bruno (1973). On the other side the World War 99 lasted 6 years and has a hundred of movies "being notorious the participation of religious lobby to impel more information about the long night that stopped humanity for centuries?.
"A journalist with his mouth shut is like burning books as made by dictatorial governments and the Inquisition. This happens because some forces don?t want something to come out and something that he knows might compromise people and institutions?, traces a parallel between what is happening to some journalists in Brazil and he sees it as part of an inheritance of the Inquisition.
 
"Much of the formation of a man, most of all an intellectual comes from reading?. As he bothered with the system of his school he run from the Index of the Catholic Church of that era and researched knowledge of those seem as outsiders and who today are reverend like Eça de Queiroz, Jorge Amado, Alexandre Herculano, Nelson Rodrigues? That is authors which delt with the human complexity.
 
Boxing also deals with the nuances of the human being as pointed lately the chronicler Wilson Baldini from the Brazilian newspaper Estado de S. Internationally he respects the efforts of Hector Javier Velazco from Argentina who struggles in a hopeful way to get better condition to his peers.
 
Cardoso laughs a little as he records of Raphael Zumbano "Love? in which he see traces of the charismatic Tonico Bastos, a character from Jorge Amado in the novel Gabriela. For a few seconds his face becomes smoother and smiley as he lefts the backstage of censorship, journalism and pugilism but the frown face comes once again as he talks about the managing situation of Marcus Vinícius de Oliveira who was involved at the same time with two boxing businessman and Cardoso believes "the rope always break in the weakest side?.
 
A common figure in the boxing events of Baby Barioni ? now unused. There he watched those Brazilians who sweat and their truly effort inside the ropes in searching for better conditions. He couldn?t see Oliveira but which he would like to do sometime and also Alexsandro "Pit? Cardoso who is known from defending his family and friends whenever needed.
 
For those boys and also the girls ?as the ones in the national Olympic squad ? in order to fly higher with their hearts and skills the magistrates is emphatic and decrees "its necessary to improve propaganda, organization of events, competent managers and free press which is indispensable even to propaganda itself?. He also sees in internet a media for this sport to go back to television but expects people acting more in cybersphere and not relying in a specific source.
 
As the talk goes I tell him of the ending of activities in the blog Corner do Leão and that this interview will be the last post. "Sad thing because it had much credibility, the news there where treated in a way that I like and today few specialized media are reliable. Back in time we had more boxing in newspaper? Talk ends and I take my last sip of coffee. The man of the house and his wife remembers me that I?m welcomed to watch other combats and even talk about Justice and Politics. The elder guides me to the gates of his buildings and says goodbye with a shake and with his left hand over my shoulder.
